Meet Your Guide
It started with a meteor. Bob was playing cricket on the Halls Creek oval when a fireball streaked across the daytime sky. Later, working as a plumber in remote Kimberley communities, he'd camp under skies so dark that fireballs would light up the ground around him. Late at night, he'd listen to Star Stuff with Stuart Gary on ABC Radio with his dad. Every answer sparked ten more questions.
Fifteen years of astronomy and astrophotography later, Bob is the only operator in the Kimberley who live-streams deep-sky objects — like the Eagle Nebula's Pillars of Creation — directly to a projector during tours. He shows guests the Hubble image, then the JWST image, then captures it live. That moment when the nebula appears on screen is the reason he does this.
Bob grew up in the Kimberley and returned to Halls Creek in 2000, finishing his plumbing apprenticeship before following his passion into conservation. He worked with the Balangarra Rangers out of Wyndham, and for the past six years has been an Operations Officer with DBCA (Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions) at Eighty Mile Beach. He runs the annual turtle monitoring program, conducts bilby and biodiversity surveys, researches native bees, and leads fish surveys along the 80 Mile Beach Marine Park. That deep knowledge of the region's ecology feeds directly into his tours — you'll learn what's on the ground as well as what's in the sky.
